As an experienced entrepreneur, Daan Durlacher knows how important it is to be well-informed about laws and regulations. Despite his knowledge, it wasn’t until later in life that he discovered he was a US Person himself and ran into all the associated laws and regulations. Through trial and error, Daan learned how the U.S. tax system works. Then, together with Michael Littaur, he founded the company Americans Overseas so that others can be well informed in advance and not have to make the same mistakes they did.

Born in the 1960s in the Netherlands to an American mother and a Dutch father, Daan quickly transitioned to being an entrepreneur in his working life. Perhaps because he felt things could always be better, or because he felt personal service was so important, which often led to struggles with management when he was trying to function in salaried employment. When he himself was completely up to date with his U.S. tax obligations, he and Michael Littaur decided to create a company where people are the focus (not the system, commercial interests, or political interests).

Experience

Daan can draw on his years of experience in various positions at multiple companies and as a successful entrepreneur. As a result, it did not take him long to master the knowledge and skills surrounding America’s citizenship-based tax system. Within a few months, he was sitting at the table with financial institutions, banks, interest groups, and European commissions, among others, to make it clear that there are major problems surrounding the implementation of the FATCA legislation, banks’ communication is inaccurate or incomprehensible, and information to citizens is unacceptably lacking. By speaking from his own experience and bringing in clients’ experiences anonymously, Daan was able to convey well that these are people and the families associated with them who are experiencing an incredible amount of unnecessary stress. Through good contacts and pragmatic advice, Daan has so far accomplished much for Americans who do not live in America.

Function and role

As one of the founders, Daan Durlacher feels very involved in the organization, despite having handed over the actual management to his business partner Linda Mabelis in 2019, he is involved on a daily basis, still helping clients for free with specific questions and guiding them through the entire process. With personal attention and human service. It is indescribable how many clients in the most distressing situations have been helped pragmatically and in clear steps with Daan’s approach. He is also the one who continues to lobby to reduce the burden on this group of people.

When will Daan stop? When no more people are unnecessarily surprised by banks, governments around the FATCA file and citizens are well informed so they can make their own considered choices. Until then, Daan makes sure Americans Overseas is there for people.
