FAQ US return

What are the next steps after I make the deposit?

  1. Upon receipt of the deposit, you will receive an email with login details for your personal digital “Americans Overseas” portal. This is valid for 24 hours. After you have created your password, you can always log in to our website via the “Login” button in the upper right corner.
  2. In your portal you can find under “Information page” and “Downloads” the page “Tax Organizer, where a Tax Organizer, checklist and instructions are provided for download. We require one completed Tax Organizer per year with all necessary details for your Streamlined Procedure (you will receive a detailed explanation by email after your deposit). You can upload all the required documents in the portal.
  3. It is best to upload all documents as soon as possible, but in any case within 2 months after your deposit. If you cannot meet this deadline, please let us know as soon as possible so we can arrange a new appointment with you.
  4. Your tax returns will be sent as a draft as soon as we receive them. After payment of the invoice as a sign of concept approval, we will send you the final statements.

I am working on my Streamlined Procedure (through 2021). When do I need to submit all my documents to Americans Overseas? What if that doesn’t work for me?

We would like to receive your documents within 2 months of receiving your deposit so that you can complete your Streamlined Procedure as soon as possible and you have enough time to file your 2022 Annual Return (which the Streamlined Procedure also requires you to file before June 15, 2023). If you cannot manage this, but have all your information fully uploaded before January 31, 2023, there should be no problem processing and filing your Streamlined Procedure on time. If you submit your information before February 28, 2023, we will do our best to have your tax return ready in a timely manner so that you can file it before the IRS deadline of June 15, 2023.

Are you really unable to deliver the documents before February 28, 2023? Please contact us in time so we can work with you to find a solution.

I am still working on my Streamlined Procedure (through 2021). Do I also have to start now with my annual US declaration of 2022?

The Streamlined Procedure can only be filed with tax years that have already expired. The 2021 tax year does not expire for the Streamlined Procedure until June 15, 2022.

Therefore, if you do a Streamlined Procedure up to and including 2021, you must file it between June 16, 2022 and June 15, 2023. From that point on, you will be “Compliant” and will be required to file a tax return each year, beginning with 2022.

However, the deadline for the regular 2022 annual tax return is also 06/15/2023 and filing is not possible until after you file your Streamlined Procedure.

However, if your Streamlined Procedure is not filed until just before the June 15, 2023 deadline, we can request a postponement of your 2022 annual return until October 15, 2023 for you.

To do this, you must meet the following conditions:

  • We received your deposit for the 2022 annual return before June 7, 2023;
  • Your SSN information is entered under the heading “US Person” (and your address is entered there) under “My Contact Information” of your online account with us.
  • Your Streamlined Procedure was filed before June 15, 2023.
